Southborough – For the children at Mary Finn School, snow left behind by the recent blizzard has made gym class an exciting outdoor adventure. Thanks to a grant written by physical education teacher Tom McCabe and school nurse Dale Burgess, the school recently received 25 pairs of snowshoes funded through the Southborough Education Foundation (SEF).

“I am the school nurse, and Tom and I are always thinking about ways to increase physical activity for our students. As the saying goes, “if you can walk, you can snowshoe.” And since we have to live in New England and endure this snow, we thought it would be fun for the kids to learn a new sport that is easy and that maybe they could also encourage their families to try,” Burgess said.

McCabe and Burgess have received other SEF grants for materials, as have many other teachers at the school.

SEF's mission, according to its website, (http://southboroughed.org) is to offer private funding through community support for creative and challenging programs that enhance the educational excellence of the Southborough public schools. The foundation's members select programs that they feel are innovative and worthy and that would not be possible within the regular school budget.
