Selectmen approve pancreatic cancer fundraiserWestborough – The Board of Selectmen approved the 4th Annual 5K/10K race to benefit the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research during its Feb. 26 meeting.

Race Event Coordinator Maria Rydelek requested a permit from the board for the event, which is sponsored by the Westborough Tennis and Swim Club. The race is scheduled to take place Sunday, April 28, at the Westborough Office Park, 1700 West Park Drive.

Rydelek said last year's event saw over 500 volunteer walkers and runners, and she expects even more this year.

“To date, we'se raised about $180,000 through this one event,” she said. “We'se all very appreciative of the town of Westborough's support on this.”

Because of the anticipated increase in volunteers this year, the race will be held entirely inside the Westborough Office Park, so as not to restrict the use of public roads. Rydelek said she has already mapped out a course inside the park, and is just awaiting approval from the park's investors.

The race will include a 10K run, a 5K walk/run and a one-mile “fun run” for kids ages 8 to12. There will a shorter “fun run” for children ages 8 and younger, as well as family-friendly activities during the races.

The race begins at 9:30 a.m., with registration starting at 8 a.m. Those interested in participating in the event are urged to visit the Lustgarten Foundation's website at www.pancreaticcancerresearchevents.org.
