Northborough ?The Rotary Club of Northborough, Inc. will be hosting its annual Scholarship Breakfast on Sunday, April 7, at the Lincoln Street School.? This year's breakfast will be the 42nd time the club hosts the popular event.
Rotarians will serve up a hearty breakfast of pancakes, sausages and drinks from 8 a.m. to noon that day. ?Another feature of the breakfast will be musical performances from Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) students.
Proceeds from the breakfast go toward a scholarship fund for Northborough students who are graduating this year from a local high school. Traditionally, approximately $8,000 to $10,000 is raised at the event, according to Chuck Frankian, the chair of the breakfast committee. Last year, $9,000 was raised; nine local students each received a $1,000 scholarship.
Frankian explained that the breakfast's success is due in great part to the generosity of local businesses that help to financially sponsor the event.
“The funds come from a lot of different businesses,” he said. “They are exceedingly generous year after year. ?All of the donations build on top of another.”
Frankian noted that the support of the business community was appreciated by the Rotarians, especially in light of an economy that is still struggling to recover.
“We'se been exceedingly fortunate in the past,” he said. “The support has been great.”
While many other scholarships are granted based on academic standings, the main criteria for the Rotary's scholarships is need, Frankian said.
“We know it's hard for many students to pay for college,” he said. “This is just another way to help local kids further their education.”
Applicants need not be from ARHS, he added. Students from other local schools are also welcome to apply; they just need to be a Northborough resident.
Those interested in applying can go to the Rotary's website (http://www.northboroughrotary.org/html/scholarship.html) for information or can pick up an application in the ARHS guidance department.?? The application deadline for the 2013 scholarships is Monday, April 15.
The scholarship breakfast is $5 per adult and $3 for seniors and children. The school is located at 76 Lincoln St.
