Marlborough – Thomas A. Kasaras, 93, of Marlborough, died peacefully Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Oakdale Rehabilitation Center in West Boylston.
Born in Haverhill, he was the son of the late Apostolos and Katerina (Katzellis) Kasaras. He was the husband of the late Anita (Bonin) Kasaras, to whom he had been married for 69 years at the time of her death in 2011.
He was an ardent sports fan and excelled in four sports while at Marlborough High School, from which he graduated in 1937. He played football for the 1937 semi-pro Trojans and played as well as managed the Curtis Shoe fast pitch softball team, which won the state title. He also managed and played for CO. K 181st Infantry basketball team, winning a divisional title in 1950 and 1951.
Mr. Kasaras was a World War II Navy veteran. He served in the Mediterranean and participated in four operations, one of which was served under Admiral Frank J. Lowry's communication staff which maintained and controlled the operation. He retired as an E7 from the Massachusetts National Guard in 1976 after 25 years of service.
Employed by the City of Marlborough for 30 years, he retired in 1982 as the foreman for the Department of Public Works Street Division for the City of Marlborough.
He was a social member of the Italian American Club, Post 45, a life member of the VFW Post 638, and a former member of the Marlborough Country Club for 30 years.
He is survived by his sons, Thomas and Stephen of Marlborough and Robert and his wife Suzanne of Northborough; his daughter, Jane and her husband Kenneth Pepiot of Bull Head City, AZ; his grandchildren, Jeffrey Kasaras of Hudson, Mark Kasaras of Worcester, Rikki Kasaras of Marlborough; and three great-grandchildren, Abigail, Matthew and Madison Kasaras. He was also the brother of the late Alexander, John, James, and George {Major} Kasaras and Athena Kamataris and Val Amati.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, May 10, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Slattery Funeral Home, 40 Pleasant St., Marlborough. Private burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
