Shrewsbury- Spencer Buell, a senior at Framingham State University, is a recipient of a 2012 Mark of Excellence Award in Region 1 from The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
According to the SPJ, the awards “honor the best of collegiate journalism from a calendar year.”
Buell, the editor-in-chief of Framingham State University's weekly newspaper, The Gatepost, was recognized in the feature writing category (medium school division) for his article about a fellow student, “My name is Owen: One transgender student's journey into manhood.”
SPJ's Region 1 includes New England, New Jersey, New York, and central/eastern Pennsylvania. First-place winners from 12 regions moved on to the national competition. More than 4,600 entries were submitted.
The Gatepost editorial board was named the national winner in the editorial writing category (medium school division).
Buell, a 2009 graduate of Shrewsbury High School, will graduate from Framingham State University May 19 with a B.A. in English and a concentration in journalism.
