070513 cartoon rsSouthborough – When it comes to new construction requirements, not everyone agrees on the definition of “open space.” ?Recently in Southborough, the Planning Board decided to remove the “Open Space Residential Development” bylaw from an upcoming proposed zoning overhaul following opposition from the Open Space Preservation Commission (OSPC).

Although the commission is clearly in support of maintaining open space, members said the proposed bylaw does not completely address all concerns when it comes to residential development.? Any ambiguity could result in developers interpreting the guidelines in a way that maximizes profit but doesn’t adequately protect open space.

Rather than completely tossing aside the bylaw, OSPC members said they will now work on it. The proposed overhaul is due to come before the voters at Town Meeting this fall.
