Marlborough – Mike McCombs, 56, of Marlborough, competed in the New York City Triathlon July 14, finishing third in the 55-59 age group and 155th overall out of 3,500 athletes. As impressive as that accomplishment was, he said it was his fundraising efforts on behalf of two friends fighting cancer that was his biggest achievement.
“I am most proud of raising $2,300 for the Livestrong organization and raced for two individuals I know fighting cancer, one a high school swim team friend and another, a former Gillette colleague,” he said.
McCombs will next be participating in the upcoming Triathlon World Championships in London this fall.
“I will continue to carry the names for my two friends with me on my equipment for the remainder of the triathlon season,” he said. “I am inspired by what anyone goes through fighting this terrible disease and certainly makes any of my ailments seem miniscule in comparison.
