Obit Irene WeltonHudson – Irene M. (Spencer) Welton, 78, of Hudson, former long-time resident of Marlborough, died Wednesday, July 31, 2013, surrounded by her loving family, at UMass Memorial Healthcare, University Campus in Worcester. She was the beloved wife of 50 years to Walter B. Welton, who died in 2004.

Irene was born and raised in Hudson, daughter of the late Edward and Alberta (Barker) Spencer. She moved to Marlborough at age 18, where she and her husband Walter raised their family. She has resided in Hudson the past two years.

Irene was employed as an office clerk for many years by the Data General Co. in Westborough until her retirement in 1985.

She enjoyed spending time with her family at their camp in Vermont, attending the Brimfield Antique Show and caring for her gardens. She took great pride in her doll collection and had an appreciation for antiques. Most of all, Irene cherished her family. She looked forward to all the occasions they would gather, especially decorating for the holidays. The memories of her giving spirit and love of life will be remembered by all who knew her, especially family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Warren W. Welton and his wife Linda of Charlton, Mark “Gus” Welton and his wife Eileen of Marlborough, Nancy M. Melanson and her husband Richard of Warren, and Walter R. Welton and his wife Kathryn of Ashby, and was predeceased by her son, Glen Welton. She is also survived by her brother, Walter H. Spencer and his wife Jean of Hudson, her nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Helen Therrien, Shirley McCarthy, and Harold Spencer.

A funeral service and celebration of Irene's life will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m., in the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, 50 Central St., Hudson. Burial services will be held privately in Brookside Cemetery, Stow, at a later date. Calling hours will be held Friday, Aug. 9, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Irene may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
