Herbert L. Gould, 69

41

Obit Herbert GouldMarlborough – Herbert L. “Herb” Gould, 69, of Marlborough, died peacefully at home Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, surrounded by his family, after a 15-month courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Kathleen E. (Feeley) Gould for the past 47 years.

He was born in Hudson, the son of the late Leslie and Mabel (Bousquet) Gould, and was raised in Berlin, until moving to Marlborough in 1966. He was a 1962 graduate of Hudson High School and captain of the football team, a team that was undefeated and went on to win the state championship.

He worked for the family business as a printer at Unique Press in Waltham for 32 years until its closing in 2000. He then worked in the Fulfillment and Copy Department of Bose Corporation in Framingham for 13 years, retiring in 2013.

He was very involved with Marlborough Youth Football, serving on its Board of Directors, and running the concessions for many years, raising tens of thousands of dollars for the organization. He spearheaded a program within the city to help all children be able to play football regardless of their ability to pay for fees and equipment.

Herb loved candlepin bowling and played in leagues throughout the state, travelling to Foxwoods to play bingo, and loved playing poker with his family. He enjoyed cribbage, ocean cruises, the Red Sox, and Patriots, but, more than anything, he was a kind, compassionate, spirited, competitive gentleman who will be dearly missed by all he loved.

Besides his wife he leaves three sons, Lt. Brian P. Gould, M.F.D. and his wife, Elita, of Marlborough, Stephen M. Gould and his wife, Heather, of Marlborough, and Jason J. Gould and his wife, Kayt, of West Boylston; a sister, Vivian Belcher of Hudson; nine grandchildren, Ian, Hayley, Peyton, Kathryn, Bethany, Ryan and Alyssa, all of Marlborough, and Olivia and Dominic of West Boylston; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by his siblings, Walter, Albert, Bernadette, and Ralph.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 11 a.m., in Immaculate Conception Church, Prospect Street. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Wilson Street. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 4 – 8 p.m., in the Fitzgerald and Collins Funeral Home, 378 Lincoln St., Marlborough.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the UMass Oncology Department, 55 Lake Ave. North, Worcester, MA 01655.
