Bette was born Bette D. Melnikoff, one of 10 children of Nathan and Minnie (Jenkins) Melnikoff. She grew up in Worcester, graduating from Commerce High School. Six years later, in 1949, Bette married David “Duddie” Massad, with whom she has shared life, love and family these past 64 years. Bette and David settled in Leicester to raise their family, moving to Westborough in 1982. They have lived there ever since.
Bette was all about family. She loved her home, devoted herself to her family and took great pride in the successes of her husband, children, and grandchildren. A simple quiet woman she supported her husband as he grew their businesses.
She was a dedicated mother to her children, Pamela Massad, Christine Mandara and her husband David, and David Massad and his wife Lisa. She leaves seven grandchildren, Emily, Katherine, Ryan, Jonathan, Rachel, Annie and Theodora “Teddie,” who adored “Nana.” She also leaves behind her three brothers, Kenneth, Noah, and Harold Melnikoff, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Several people she dearly loved in her life predeceased her, including her grandson, Gregory Mandara in 2009; her brother, Martin; and her sisters, Isabelle O’Connor, Ruth Cutroni, Hazel Chaplin, Beatrice Mandela, and Muriel Hall.
Her funeral service will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 6, at 11 a.m., at the First Unitarian Church, 90 Main St., Worcester. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery.
