Shrewsbury – Salvatore “Sal” Mangano, 77, longtime Shrewsbury resident and retired Worcester Police Officer, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, April 2, 2014, surrounded by his devoted family.
Sal was born in Worcester, a son of Italian immigrants Salvatore “Sam” and Raffaela “Mary” (Gallo) Mangano. He was raised, educated and lived in Worcester, before moving to Shrewsbury 20 years ago.
He leaves the family he loved so much, his wife, Marilyn; his children, Gary Mangano of Yuma, Arizona, Tina Arseneault and her husband Paul of Cherry Valley, Deborah Leone and her husband Lawrence of Millbury, Melissa Sunden of Worcester, Stephen Sturgis and his wife Shelley of Cambria, California, and Michael Sturgis of Nantucket; two sisters, Lucy Gerardi of Brewster and Evelyn Fede of Marlborough; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Two sisters, Frances Abato and Dorothy Minish, as well as his first wife, Carole, predeceased him.
Sal worked for the city of Worcester for over 33 years as a Worcester Police Officer before retiring in 1998. He was a member of St Mary's Church, the International Brotherhood of Police Officers Union, the Southern Massachusetts Police Association, the Greendale Retired Men's Club, Worcester Credit Union, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #4, and the Police Relief Association. He loved to travel with Marilyn to California and Nantucket Island, and loved the outdoors and to ride his motorcycle.
His grandchildren brought him great pride and enjoyment. He was happiest with them and with his family around him.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Friday, April 4, from 4 – 7 p.m., in the Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., Worcester. His funeral will be held Saturday, April 5 from the funeral home with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St Mary's Church, 640 Main St., Shrewsbury. Burial will be private.
The Mangano family would like to thank the Notre Dame Hospice and Dr. Vijay Kasturi of the UMass Memorial Oncology Department for all the care, compassion and understanding given to the family and Salvatore during a difficult time.
