Shrewsbury – In January, an Eagle Scout recognition ceremony was held for Joshua A. Mellen, 19, of Shrewsbury, while he was home on leave from the U.S. Marine Corps. The Eagle Scout medal was conferred upon Mellen by Boy Scout Troop 114 Scoutmaster Rick Spurr.
Joining in 2001, Mellen began his scouting career with Milford Cub Scout Pack 67. He crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 114 in 2006, where he held the positions of patrol leader, quartermaster and assistant senior patrol leader and earned 22 merit badges. He attended the National Scout Jamboree in 2010 at Fort A.P. Hill, Va., and Seabase High Adventure in the Florida Keys in 2011. His scouting honors include the Arrow of Light, World Conservation Award, National Youth Leader Training, BSA Snorkeling, and the Order of the Arrow, Scouting's National Honor Society.
For his Eagle Scout service project, Mellen designed and organized the building of three sets of award stands for the Special Olympics of Massachusetts. The project took a total of 151 volunteer hours.
Mellen is a 2013 graduate of Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School where he studied electrical wiring, played football, and served as the team captain in his senior year. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in October 2013, and is a recent graduate of Military Occupational Specialty training school where he was one of the top five graduates and earned the rank of Lance Corporal meritoriously. He was awarded the “Bursting Bomb” Achievement Certificate for graduating in the top 10 percent of the class for superior performance, outstanding achievement of technical knowledge, hard work and personal dedication.
Mellen is the son of Kevin and Sandra Mellen of Shrewsbury.
