Northborough –The Algonquin Regional Tomahawks defeated the Groton-Dunstable Crusaders 27-24 in a game played Oct. 10 at Dick Walsh Field in front of a crowd of 6,972. After dropping their first two games of the season, the Tomahawks have now won three straight to bring their record to 3-2. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Barry threw three touchdown passes and senior Eric Hart kicked two field goals and three extra points in the victory.
Algonquin was ahead for most of the game, until Groton-Dunstable scored a touchdown to take a 21-17 lead with 4:32 left in the game. The lead was short lived; on the first play after the kickoff, Barry threw a quick pass to Kyle Hill, who evaded several tackles and took the ball down the field 52 yards for a touchdown to regain the lead.
Groton-Dunstable tied up the game at 24-24 on a field goal by Eric Yanchenko, with just 24 seconds remaining on the clock. The Tomahawks did not give up. Barry took control, and completed one quick pass and then ran the ball himself to bring the ball up to the 9-yard line with seven seconds remaining in the game. Hart then came in to kick his second field goal of the game, which sealed the win for the Tomahawks as the final seconds ticked down.
