Westborough – There was storytelling, food and sweets, mendi (henna) hand decorating, dancing, rangoli (folk art) and more at the Mill Pond School Celebration of Diwali Oct. 28.
Diwali, the “Festival of Lights,” is one of the most celebrated and festive holidays for Hindus and welcomes the New Year in the Indian culture. The five-day festival falls between mid-October and mid-November.
The event was organized by the Mill Pond Parent Group, Mill Pond’s Diversity Council, The Indian Society of Worcester, Paradise Biryani Pointe Restaurant and Mayuri Restaurant.
“The whole idea behind the Diversity Council (formed last year by the Mill Pond Parent Group) is to celebrate the diversity that’s in our Mill Pond community and to become more familiar with all of the customs and cultures that are represented here and provide opportunities for staff, parents and children come together for happy occasions,” said Principal Suzanne Kenny.
Well over 100 people gathered for the evening. Many were dressed in traditional clothing with the women and girls wearing beautifully colored and sequined outfits.
“We got these directly from India but you could also purchase this traditional dress from an Indian specialty store,” said Rasmi Nayak.
Upon entering the cafeteria, where the evening’s events took place, seventh-grade Gibbons Middle School student Crispy Sharma handed guests the traditional “sindhoor,” which was placed in the middle of their foreheads.
“This sign represents the nationality and festivity,” Sharma explained. “I love this holiday because I get to
set up lights outside and spend time with my family.”
