The Algonquin boys’ soccer team receives its trophy for winning the Central Mass. Division 1 finals.
Holden – The Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks boys’ soccer team defeated the Wachusett Regional High School Mountaineers 1-0 in the Central Mass. Division 1 championship game played Nov. 15 in Holden.
Shortly before the conclusion of the first half, Domenic Cianci received a pass from Tyler Morin and knocked in the lone goal of the game. Jonny Manousaridis was perfect in goal for the
Tomahawks, making several key saves in the second half to preserve the victory.
The Tomahawks now boast a record of 19-1-1, with its only loss coming against this same Wachusett team earlier in the season.
The boys will now take on Amherst in the Division 1 state semifinal game which will be played Tuesday, Nov. 18 at Nashoba Regional High School at 7 p.m.
Earlier in the day, the Algonquin girls lost 1-0 to Nashoba Regional in the girls Central Mass Division 1 championship game played in Bolton. This was the third year in a row the Algonquin girls have reached the Central Mass. finals, but have had to settle for the runner-up trophy.
First year Nashoba head coach Renee Moulton had been an assistant coach at Algonquin for the past seven years and still teaches social studies at the school.
