Shrewsbury – Southgate at Shrewsbury celebrated its 25th anniversary Nov. 21 to 23 as residents of the retirement community ranging in age from 65 to 96 presented “Ed Sullivan’s All-Star Salute to Southgate” at the facility’s Flanagan Theater. The musical-comedy revue was written and directed by Deanna Swan, program director.
Tom Klett channeled Sullivan as the variety show’s host. Barbara Driscoll mimicked Topo Gigio delivering the Italian mouse’s signature line, “Eddie, kiss me goodnight.” Other residents portrayed yesteryear’s entertainment icons ranging from Doris Day to the Beatles.
The finale featured the full cast singing altered lyrics to the tune “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from the musical “Gypsy.” A verse proclaimed their active lifestyles: “Play some bridge, bowl a string, join the chorus where all get to sing. You can dance, you can paint. Bored to tears? That, we ain’t. There’s always something fun for us to do. Honey, everyone’s happy at Southgate, like me and like you!”
