Maria H. Roberts, of Marlborough

Marlborough – Mrs. Maria H. Roberts, of Marlborough, died peacefully of natural causes Thursday, Dec. 24, 2014 at the Assisted Living Unit of the Coleman House in Northborough. Her adoring and loving husband, William Payne Roberts Jr., predeceased her in 2008, while they both lived in Marlborough.

Mrs. Roberts is survived by her son, Carlos M. Roberts; her daughter-in-law, Belita of Portugal; her daughter and son-in-law, Fatinha and Geoffrey Kerr of Acton; and four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren in Ohio, Arizona, and Belgium, along with three nephews and one niece that reside in Lisbon, Portugal.

Born in Angola and raised in Portugal, Mrs. Roberts was a high school art teacher, where she taught and mentored many students, some of whom, 50 years later, still corresponded with their often-proclaimed favorite teacher.

In 1962, Mr. and Mrs. Roberts established residence in Newton and later in Philadelphia, Penn.

Mrs. Roberts was a most talented and gifted multi-media artist, sculptor, and accomplished poet, equally proficient in Portuguese and English. She was cherished by her friends and will be remembered for her elegant demeanor, exquisite beauty, and devotion to her family, especially to her beloved “Bill.”

Mr. and Mrs. Roberts chose an early retirement in Siasconset, Nantucket, their “Island Paradise,” where they lived their dream for 17 years, pursuing many interests and hobbies, including her exquisite art, poetry, and legendary gardening. Thirteen years ago they moved to Marlborough due to health issues and to be closer to their children, Fatinha and Geoff Kerr.

Her family and friends will profoundly miss Mrs. Roberts.

Final arrangements are by the William Short and Sons of Marlborough and private services in her memory will be held locally and in Portugal.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to VNA Care Network & Hospice, 254 Second Ave., Suite 200, Needham, MA 02494 in loving memory of Mrs. Roberts.
