Obit Gerard J CoutureShrewsbury – Gerard J. Couture, 94, of Shrewsbury, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015 in UMass Memorial Medical Center-University Campus after an illness.

He leaves his wife, Vera Couture; a sister; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters.

Gerard was born in Northern Ontario, Canada to American parents whom moved back to the States when he was 7 years old. During the depression, he spent several years in the C.C.C. Camps and then served in the Army, participating in five of the major campaigns from Normandy through the Ardennes. He found himself in Czechoslovakia in central Europe, where they waited for the Russian Army to catch up. It was there he met his wife, Vera, 70 years ago. They were married 66 years.

He worked 30 years at Steelcraft in Millbury as a foreman of the Upholstery Department, retiring 1988. His favorite joy in life besides, of course, his beloved wife, Vera, was living in the house that he built. His other interest was collecting antiques.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Mass Saturday, Jan. 17, at 10 a.m., in Saint Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Tpke., Shrewsbury. Burial will be at a later date in Mountain View Cemetery of Shrewsbury.
