Hudson – Jose Maria Chaves, 73, of Hudson, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2105, surrounded by his loving family, at Marlborough Hospital. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Maria F. (Tavares) Chaves of Hudson.

Jose Maria was born and raised in Santa Maria, the Azores of Portugal, son of the late Antonio Chaves and Maria (Bairos) Carvalho. He has resided in Hudson since emigrating from Santa Maria in 1976.

He was employed as a machinist for 32 years by the New England Tape Company of Hudson until retiring in 2008. He was a member of Saint Michael’s Parish in Hudson and the Hudson Portuguese Club.

Jose Maria was a loving husband and father. He loved and cherished his three adoring grandchildren and always looked forward to attending their many sporting activities. He will truly be missed by all.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his two daughters, Aida Luz and her husband Nelson of Hudson and Noemia Duffy and her husband James of Marlborough, and his three loving grandchildren, Michael and Miranda Luz of Hudson and Marissa Duffy of Marlborough. He is also survived by his three sisters, Celeste Fernandes and her husband Antonio of Canada, Deolinda Figuereido and her husband Agostino of Canada, and Maria B. Braga and her husband Carlos of Hudson; his brother, Jaime Chaves and his wife Maria of Canada; and his many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Maria Rosa Bairos and her late husband Guilhermo and son in-law of the late Manuel and Filomena Andrade.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, Feb. 2, at 9 a.m., in Saint Michael’s Church, 21 Manning St., Hudson. Burial will follow in Saint Michael’s Cemetery, Hudson. Family and friends may attend calling hours Sunday, Feb. 1, from 4-7 p.m., at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, 50 Central St., Hudson.
