Northborough – The Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks boys’ and girls’ basketball teams defeated the Shrewsbury High School Colonials in back-to-back games Feb. 6. The combination of senior night for Algonquin, the spirited crowd and the music of the pep band provided the extra bit of magic the Tomahawks needed to pull off two dramatic wins.
The Algonquin girls squeaked by Shrewsbury 35-33 in the first game of the evening. The score was close all evening, although Algonquin fell behind in the fourth quarter and rallied to catch up. They held a slim 33-31 lead with 0:42 remaining in the game. Shrewsbury scored with 0:22 remaining to tie it up. Algonquin junior Caroline Leonard hit the game winning shot a few ticks before the final buzzer to win the game. Emily Carens was the top scorer for Algonquin with 16 points, while Tori Vargas was Shrewsbury’s top scorer with 9 points. The Tomahawks improve to 8-7 on the season while the Colonials fall to 6-10.

After trailing for much of the game, Algonquin junior Joe Wallace hit a free throw with 0:38 remaining in the game to tie it up at 53-53. Junior Jason Truax then scored with just 2.4 seconds remaining to seal the win for Algonquin. Wallace was the top scorer for Algonquin for 19 points and Kevin Akerson was Shrewsbury’s leading scorer with 16 points. The Tomahawks improve to 6-10 on the season while the Colonials fall to 7-9.
