Shrewsbury – Catherine T. (Hyland) Flynn, of Shrewsbury, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015 after an illness. She was 73.
Cathy was born April 14, 1941 in Worcester, a daughter of the late Owen and Johanna (Foley) Hyland. She graduated from the former St. Peter’s High School and worked for Traveler’s Insurance Co. before her marriage. After raising her children she worked for over 20 years as a medical secretary at UMass Memorial Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul D. Flynn, in 1988.
She loved retirement and the opportunities it provided to give her time and assistance to others. She was an active volunteer in the Worcester Public Schools and in the hospice program of the Visiting Nurses Association. She took many courses through the WISE program at Assumption College and traveled often with friends. She greatly enjoyed time with her family, most especially her grandsons. Cathy will be remembered as a kind-hearted and generous woman of strong faith. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She leaves her children, Kevin Flynn of Boulder, Colo. and Marybeth Boyle and her husband Jason of Boylston; her grandsons, Connor Sganga and William Boyle, both of Boylston; her siblings, Ann Jones and her husband Raymond of West Boylston and Patrick Hyland and his wife Anne-Marie of Harwich; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Cathy’s life by gathering for calling hours Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 5-8 p.m., at Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center, and again Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 9 a.m., before leaving in procession to Saint Mary of the Hills, 630 Cross St., Boylston, where her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery of Worcester.
