Obit Mary MacDonaldWestborough – Mary M. MacDonald, 95, of Westborough, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015 at the UMass Memorial Healthcare-University Hospital in Worcester. She was the wife of the late Carl A. MacDonald.

Born in Somerville, she was the daughter of the late James and Hannah (MacLeod) McNeilly. She was educated in Somerville and was a 1938 graduate of Somerville High School. She also graduated from McLean Hospital School of Nursing, Belmont, in 1941.

Mary worked as a registered nurse with McLean Hospital in Belmont. In later years, she volunteered with the Visiting Nurses Association in Needham. During her time with the VNA she was asked to teach a “baby-sitting course.” It was very well accepted and received much publicity around the world. Even Life Magazine did a write up on it.

She was a member of the Scottish Auxiliary, where she served as president of the Local Auxiliary, was an officer in the Grand Lodge, and eventually became Grand President of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Order of Scottish Clans in the U.S. and Canada.

Mary was a member of the Congregational Church of Westborough, a former Girl Scout Leader, and had been a resident of Westborough since 1998, previously living in Carver and Needham.

Besides spending time with family, she enjoyed camping, crafts, bingo, crossword puzzles, card games, and watching her beloved Red Sox.

Mary is survived by one daughter, Carlene H. Carpenter and her husband George of Northborough; one sister, Evelyn Fraser of Tewksbury; two grandchildren, Holly Raissipour and her husband David and Kenneth Carpenter and his fiancé Erica Delong; and three great-grandchildren, Catherine, Alexandra and Sarah. She was pre-deceased by seven brothers and one sister.

Her funeral service will be held Monday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m., in the Rand-Harper-Pickering Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., Westborough. Burial will follow in Westlawn Cemetery of Lowell. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday, Feb. 22, from 2-5 p.m.
