Shrewsbury – Shrewsbury fire officials said that there were two incidents reported on Feb. 19 from ice dams falling from rooftops that then severed a natural gas line in one instance and an oil line in another instance.
There was a gas main break at 808 Avalon Way yesterday due to a large ice mass fallen from the roof and breaking the main feed for the unit off inside the house. The natural gas levels were quite high so officials evacuated all adjacent units and contacted the proper support from building maintenance, utilities and public departments. The scene was then turned over to maintenance with NSTAR still present.
The second incident occurred at 14 Bell Ridge. The oil contractor notified officials that an outdoor 275 tank’s fuel line had been damaged by a large icicle and the contents of the tank discharged into the ground. The Department of Environmental Protection Hazmat 1 was contacted and first responders were able to contain the fuel with absorbent pads and speedy dry. Additional clean-up will be handled by the owner’s insurance and overseen by the DEP. Peterson Oil will be applying for a temporary tank installation and a tank removal application.
