Marlborough – On any given day, Kennedy’s Restaurant in Marlborough is a bustling, busy place at lunch time. But on April 13 there was an extra charge of excitement in the air as nearly 70 of the city’s senior citizens converged upon the restaurant to celebrate the Boston Red Sox’s home season opener.
For the past few years, Kerry, the restaurant’s bar manager, has held a big kick-off party to celebrate the start of the baseball season. The staff all wear baseball t-shirts and there are traditional snacks, such as peanuts and popcorn, on all the tables.
On most Mondays, the Marlborough Senior Center features a “blue plate lunch” at the center where residents can meet and enjoy some camaraderie as well as a nice meal. Once a month, the lunches are held instead at a local restaurant.
“Kennedy’s was nice enough to reach out to us and invite us here to celebrate opening day,” Lisa Martino, the center’s program coordinator, said. “We knew Kerry was a big fan and that she would make it really fun.”
Buoyed by the beautiful, sunny day, the guests were all in a festive mood and ready to forget last year’s disappointing Red Sox record.
“I have a good feeling,” Jim Bush, who was wearing his Red Sox cap and a red jacket for the occasion, said. “I think they are going to do very well this year.”
Janice McCracken noted she had borrowed a t-shirt from her son just for the occasion.
“This is a fun way to start the season,” she added.
Attendees were also able to buy tickets for specials prizes and a 50/50 raffle. All monies raised were to be donated to the center to help pay for future programs, Martino said.
