Company offers full-service landscape construction options

Region – Now that the snow is finally melting after one of the worst winters on record, many homeowners will most likely be dismayed when they see what Mother Nature has done to their yards. But a call to McCarthy’s Landscaping & Irrigation could quickly turn that despair into relief. For this West Boylston-based company, now celebrating its 20th year, has a myriad of services to help you get your yard into top shape again.
Roger McCarthy, who owns the company with his wife Sue, started the business in 1995.
“It was just me and one truck,” he recalled.
As the company began to grow, it was based in Shrewsbury until moving to its current location in 2007. It now has 17 employees and a fleet of 10 vehicles.
Sue joined the company in 2003 as controller. That, according to Roger, was instrumental in helping to elevate McCarthy’s to its current level of professionalism.
“She took over the business end, and really took charge of the things that I was not strong in so I could concentrate in the things that I am,” he said. “She makes sure that all of our customers get quality, personalized service. If she is not here when they call, she will call them back very quickly.”
McCarthy’s serves all types of customers, from private homeowners to corporate accounts. They have a wide range of services including hardscape (walls, patios, sidewalks, stairs, fire pits and outdoor kitchens), plantings and water features (waterfalls, ponds and fountains). With their vast experience in aspects of design and installation they can transform your property into one that you will take pleasure in for years to come.
The company offers a selection of high-quality mulch, loam, stone and gravel.
“We display everything here at our headquarters,” Sue said. “You can come here and see and feel it and walk on it.”
McCarthy’s also can install an irrigation system in your yard that will not only function in an environmentally responsible way but will also help protect the value of your property and keep it looking beautiful.
For spring cleanups, they can assist with tasks such as general cleanups, mulching, mowing, fertilizing and pruning.
“We can come out and give you a free estimate,” Roger said, “whether it be for a one-time job or a maintenance program.”
On their website, there are photos that show the different stages of work they have done for their customers. There are also testimonials from satisfied clients who appreciate not only the high quality of the work but also the personalized service they receive from the entire McCarthy’s team.
One customer wrote: “Roger, I would like to personally thank you for a job well done. I found you and your crew to be professional, and your work to be exceptional. Also, I appreciate all the advice you’ve given and I was impressed with your prompt service.”
“I was selling my home and at the last minute I realized I needed some backhoe work done,” another customer wrote. “Calling McCarthy’s and working with Roger was the easiest part of selling my home.”
McCarthy’s also takes great pride in giving back to those in need. Last October the company went “pink” for the month of October to raise breast cancer awareness. Everyone on the staff wore pink t-shirts and every vehicle had a pink ribbon decal. The company also made a donation to an organization that supports research for breast cancer. The team had an extra special reason to commemorate the month – Sue is a 14-year breast cancer survivor.
“But we know not everyone is that lucky,” Roger noted. “Everyone knows someone who has had been affected by this terrible disease, whether they won the battle or unfortunately succumbed to it.”
The couple said they hope to add to their philanthropic activities this year and are currently evaluating different options.
“We know how fortunate we are and we want to do something to help others, perhaps kids in need,” Roger said. “And we will definitely do something for breast cancer awareness again, too.”
