Shrewsbury – Shrewsbury Public Library patrons can now borrow more than books from the library. Over 70 varieties of vegetable and flower seeds, generously donated by Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, are available to library-goers. A display of the seeds will be placed near the reference desk and families can borrow up to 10 packets of seeds (no more than two packets of each variety). For information about how to save the seeds and return them – this is entirely optional – patrons may leave their email address for library staff to follow up with them.

The library will also be holding the grand opening of the new garden near the Children’s Room, featuring herbs, flowers and vegetables, Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Children and families can take a tour of the garden, make a craft and plant a bean in a cup to take home.

Diana Karas and her friends from the Garden Club of Shrewsbury took the initiative to plan and create a garden in the Children’s courtyard, and worked out the logistics of starting a seed library.

For questions about the seed library, contact Walker Evans at the reference desk at 508-841-8533.
