West Springfield – The number 3 seed Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks boys lacrosse team fell to the number 1 seed Longmeadow High School Lancers by a score of 15-9 in the MIAA Central/West Division 2 finals. The game was played June 12 at West Springfield High School.
Algonquin struck first with a goal by Michael Tascione early in the first quarter, but Longmeadow responded with four goals in the first quarter, on their way to a 7-3 halftime lead. Mike Martens, Alex Sabel and Zach Skowronek each scored twice for the Tomahawks. Paul Luongo netted one goal, as did Justin Stassi, who scored the final goal with just 1.6 seconds remaining in the game.
After the game, Tomahawks head coach Rich Luongo described the team as “the best group of seniors he’s ever coached. The whole team really came together as a family this year.” He continued, “The team played really well today but you just can’t play catch-up with a team like Longmeadow.”
Algonquin concludes their season with a 16-6 record, while Longmeadow advances to the State Division 2 tournament where there will face Beverly on June 15.
