Marlborough- The five students selected to receive 2015 Marlborough Scholarship Awards were announced by Mayor Arthur Vigeant at the June 15 City Council meeting. In making the presentation, he thanked residents of the city and local business owners who contributed to the designated fund through the city’s tax billing system.
“This is the 19th year we are giving checks to deserving students,” said Vigeant. “We got approval in 1996 to seek voluntary contributions through tax bills.”
City Council President Edward Clancy and Vigeant presented the scholarships to three graduating seniors who attended the meeting – Santiago Vargas, Advanced Math and Science Academy; Ryan Keane, Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School (AVRTHS); and Julia Marshall, Marlborough High School (MHS).
Unable to attend the meeting were recipients Alysha McGovern, MHS; and Vincent Pascal, AVRTHS.
In other business, councilors accepted a gift of land on the south side of the Jericho Hill Recreation Area to be preserved as open space and transferred to the Conservation Commission. The land is designated to increase open space, preserve vistas, provide wildlife habitat and enable future passive and active recreational opportunities.
