Westborough – The end of the school year is quickly approaching and on June 12, the students at Annie B. Fales Elementary School participated in its annual Field Day. Each grade wore a different color and a much-anticipated opening ceremony marked the beginning of the day’s activities.
Field Day events included tug of war, giant beach ball toss, frogs bucket, parachute, capture the flag and more. Many of the students’ parents and siblings came to cheer them on. Parents also came to volunteer at each activity.
Matt Travis, Fales’ physical education teacher, has organized Field Day for nine years.
“There are typically about 30 to 40 parent volunteers and Maureen Nelson, an absolute saint, helps me manage the planning piece. I could not do this without her,” Travis said. “We spend about 40 hours plus putting this together. It’s all worth it in the end.”
One spectator, Susan Klein, came all the way from Buffalo just to spend some time with her granddaughter, first-grader Lauren.
“I am so lucky that I am here today,” she said. “Not every grandparent gets to do this and I am grateful. What a really fun event this is.”
“This day is also about teaching school unity,” remarked Travis. “The volunteers are what help me make this day possible. Everyone should know how much I appreciate all the support from our wonderful Fales families.”
