Northborough – Vernie C. (Jones) Phelps, a lifelong resident of Northborough, passed away Friday, Aug. 21, 2015 at Marlborough Hospital at the age of 91. Her husband, Allyn M. Phelps, died in 2011.
She leaves behind two sons, Allyn Phelps Jr. and his wife Jackie of Northborough and Arthur Phelps, also of Northborough; five grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Harry Jones, and her sister, Carolyn Braman.
Vernie graduated from Northborough High School, class of 1942. Years ago, she worked at the former Paul Revere Life Insurance Co. in Worcester. She later worked for the Town of Northborough as an assistant accountant for 26 years, retiring in 1982.
She was a member of First Parish Church Unitarian, Northborough Grange, Northborough Historical Society, and Friends of the Northborough Senior Center.
Nothing gave Vernie greater joy than spending time with her family. She was devoted to their happiness and well-being. She loved her garden and all growing things, long walks, and epic summer road trips with her late husband. In the winter, her thoughts turned to the birds that flocked to her well-tended feeders.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 5-8 p.m., in Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main St. Vernie’s funeral will take place Thursday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m., in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Howard Street Cemetery.
