Grafton American Legion and VFW commemorate Veterans Day
By K.B. Sherman, Contributing Writer
Grafton – American Legion Post 92, Delisle Goulet, in Grafton — joined by members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1497 of South Grafton — recognized Veterans’ Day 2015 with a ceremony at the Legion post Nov. 11. In a misting, cold rain, before a crowd of 100 veterans, families, and friends, post members and guests saluted the US Flag, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and heard a prayer, followed by “It is the Soldier,” read by the post chaplain. The ceremony then completed, those assembled adjourned for lunch.
It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.
It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.
It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.
