Obit-Flag_USE-THIS-ONE4Marlborough – Herbert C. “Herbie” Butland, 78, died early Thursday morning, Nov. 12, 2015 after a short period of failing health. He was the husband of Marion (Birri) Butland.

He was born in Somerville, the son of the late James E. and Evelyn F. (Sullivan) Butland,and lived in Marlborough for the past 55 years. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.

Herby served the city of Marlborough as a member of the Marlborough Fire Department for 30 years and acted as the Civil Defense Director for many years and many events, including the “Blizzard of 78.” He also worked many years at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow, and was a longtime member of the Hudson Elks.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Timothy Butland and his wife Sue of Hudson and Shawn Butland and his wife Laura of Marlborough; two daughters, Tammy Wessinger and her husband Stephen of Marlborough and Nancy Butland of  Marlborough; one brother, Robert Butland and his wife Angela of Maryland; three sisters, Rita Bernard and her husband John of Florida, Evelyn Crippen and her husband Edward of Hudson, and Kathryn Kittredge and her husband John of Marlborough; a sister-in-law, Betty Butland of Maryland; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Shawn, Thomas, Dean, Darren, and Kaytlynn Butland and Zack and Matt Frederick; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, James and Edward Butland.

His funeral will be held Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m., in the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 472 Lincoln St., Marlborough. Burial will take place at a later date. Visiting hours at the William R. Short and Son Funeral Home (www.shortfuneral.com), 95 West Main St., Marlborough will be held Monday, Nov. 16, from 5-8 p.m.
