Westfield – The Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks girls’ soccer team defeated the Minnechaug Regional High School Falcons by a score of 2-1 in the Division 1 State semi-finals. The game was played Nov. 17 at Westfield State University.
Algonquin struck first, on a goal by Sydney Carney with 12:15 remaining in the first half. Algonquin held a 1-0 lead for just over 40 minutes until Minnechaug tied the game with 12:12 remaining on the clock. With just 3:55 remaining in the game, Mackenzie Smith scored an unassisted goal from 25 yards out to clinch the win.
Algonquin advances to the state finals, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 21 where they will match up against Needham. Game time and location have not yet been finalized.
