Shrewsbury – Staff Sergeant Martin Daley, an Army Recruiter from the Worcester recruiting station, visited Floral Street School Nov. 10 to present information about Veterans Day to first graders. Students learned about the different branches of the military and were informed of the purpose of Veterans Day – to honor those who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. military. Students discussed ways that citizens can show appreciation for veterans, including attending local celebrations, volunteering at local veterans’ homes, and writing letters of thanks to those in service.

Daley led students in writing letters to deployed soldiers from Fort Drum, N.Y,, 1st brigade 22nd infantry battalion, and Fort Campbell, Ky., 2nd brigade 502nd infantry battalion. Currently these soldiers are stationed in Afghanistan. The letters will be delivered overseas by their battalions’ chaplains to thank the men and women currently serving as active members of the U.S. Army.
