Shrewsbury – The Shrewsbury Public Library recently received a $5,000 grant from the Greater Worcester Community Foundation for the fourth consecutive year for its popular English Conversation Circle program.

The program, in its current format of four sessions a week for adults wishing to improve their conversational skills, was launched in 2010. It has attracted a diverse group of people who have settled in Shrewsbury and the neighboring towns but who were originally from China, Japan, India, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Russia and other countries. Not only does it help them gain confidence speaking English but it also helps them in their social interactions and professional pursuits. They learn about American culture, holidays and traditions and this helps them adapt to life in this country.

The one-hour intermediate classes are held Tuesdays at 2 p.m. at Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union, 489 Boston Turnpike, and Wednesdays at 5 p.m. at Shrewsbury Library, 214 Lake St.

Beginner’s classes are Thursdays at 5 p.m. at Shrewsbury Library and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. at Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union.

Anyone wishing to participate in the English Conversation Circle can contact the library at 508-841-8531 or send an email to [email protected].
