Berlin – A raccoon that was stuck on top of a utility pole for three days was finally rescued Sunday afternoon.

The raccoon had been on top of a National Grid pole across from the town’s post office on Pleasant St. since Dec. 10. After an outpouring of concern from residents, National Grid agreed to shut off the power so a crew from the Animal Rescue League of Boston could go up in a bucket truck and try to capture the raccoon in a net. They were successful in doing so, but the critter did slip out of the net once on the ground. Fortunately he but was recaptured, put in a cage and then transported to a wildlife rehabilitation center.

Karen Blakeney, who lives near the post office and had contacted numerous authorities about the raccoon’s dilemma, was relieved, she said, that he was down.

“He was definitely injured so no matter the final outcome at least he won’t be in pain anymore,” she said. “He’s in good hands now.”
