Shrewsbury – The visiting Marlborough High School Panthers boys basketball team handed the St. John’s High School Pioneers their first loss of the season Jan. 2, as they won a hard-fought battle that had the feel of a playoff game by a score of 55-47.
The Panthers had 16-10 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back, as St. John’s was playing catch-up all night and never had a lead. The Pioneers tied the game briefly at 18-18 mid-way through the second quarter and then again at 42-42 early in the fourth quarter. With 2:07 remaining in the game and the score 48-47, St. John’s was just one point behind but Marlborough scored the final seven points in the game to seal the victory.
Marlborough’s Chris Doherty was the overall top scorer with 21 points. Liam Shanahan scored nine and Jose de La Cruz added eight points. Adham Floyd was the top scorer for St. John’s with nine points while Tyler Mola added eight.
Marlborough improves to 5-1 on the season while St. John’s falls to 6-1.
