Obit-Flag_USE-THIS-ONE4Marlborough – Harold A. Layton, 64, of Marlborough, formerly of Fitchburg, passed away at his residence Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, with his loving family at his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sheila J. (Hakala) Layton of Marlborough.

Harold was born in Hudson, son of the late Albert and Phyllis (Tighe) Layton. He was raised in Marlborough where he attended local schools.

Harold spent many years working as a mechanic in the Massachusetts National Guard and traveled extensively as a member of the Guard. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War and Iraqi Freedom in 2009. He was proud of his 26 years serving his country and was honorably discharged in 2010. He was a member and Past Commander of the V.F.W. in Hudson and also served as the District Commander for the V.F.W. He was a member of the American Legion in Maynard.

Harold had many interests in his life, but his passion was serving his country and volunteering his time wherever it was needed. He was a devoted husband, loving father and especially cherished his three loving grandchildren. He was a true patriot and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Audra English and her husband Dana of Leominster, and his son, Shaun Layton and his wife Eleanor of Leominster. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Trombley and her husband Francis of Marlborough; his brother, Douglas Layton of Rhode Island; and his three loving grandchildren, Brittany, Austin and Cadence English, all of Leominster, along with many nieces and nephews.

A service and celebration of Harold’s life will be held Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m., in the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, 50 Central St., Hudson. Burial services with military honors will follow at 1 p.m. in the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen St., Winchendon.
