Westborough – Jessica Olson of Westborough has received the Girl Scout Gold Award. Her project, titled “Happy Trails,” educated others about hiking safety and preparedness.

The major components of her project were a day hike and presentations to kids and families. Olson complied a booklet of information for local outdoor stores. An avid hiker, she worked hands-on with kids, interacting with families, answering their questions, and sharing her passion for the outdoors.

Olson is attending the University of New Hampshire, majoring in animal sciences; she hopes to become a veterinarian. When not studying, she participates in a group called CATS (Creating Acceptance Through Students) and works with local elementary and middle school kids to help prevent bullying.

The Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, is an honor bestowed on only 5 percent of Girl Scouts in grades 9 through 12.
