Region – The Assabet Valley Regional Technical School (AVRTS) hockey team defeated Grafton High School by a score of 1-0 in a hard-fought and hard-hitting game played Jan. 19 in Worcester.

AVRTS jumped ahead about halfway through the first period with a goal from Payton Brier. A golden opportunity came for Grafton later in the period with Assabet’s Jared Garcia serving a four minute game misconduct penalty for hitting from behind, but the Indians could not capitalize on the power play.

Much to the dislike of coaches and fans, the Aztecs were called for another hitting from behind game misconduct early in the second period. However, goaltender Christopher Lazaros and the Assabet defense maintained a clean score sheet during the four minute penalty kill.

Grafton had plenty of scoring chances in the third period, including a chance to bury a loose puck in front of the net with less than 20 seconds remaining. Despite the offensive surge from the Indians, AVRTS was able to preserve the win.
