Marlborough – The growing interest in buying, selling and trading a variety of items through websites prompted a discussion on a proposal to establish a “safe zone” in the city at the Jan. 25 City Council meeting. Ward 3 City Councilor Matthew Elder made a recommendation that the city establish a parking space in front of the police station on Bolton Street to accommodate residents conducting these types of transactions commonly created on Craigslist, Facebook and other websites.
The Operations and Oversight Committee met recently to consider the proposal and received the approval of Police Chief Mark Leonard who stated at the meeting that the front parking lot at the police station is currently under video surveillance and it would not be necessary to purchase cameras or other equipment. He suggested that a sign be placed there to alert residents to its availability.
The Operations and Oversight Committee will confer with City Solicitor Donald Ryder Jr. for any potential legal ramifications and move for a vote of the full council at the next meeting to be held Monday, Feb. 8.
Council President Edward Clancy stated he is in favor of the plan.
“It will help keep away potential criminal actions,” he said.
Leonard said he had talked with Wayland Police Chief Robert Irving, where Safe Zones have been established for several months, and they have had no problems.
“I think it will work well and be much safer,” he said.
Elder said these designated areas have also been created in other communities.
In other action, Councilors referred to the Finance Committee a request from Leonard for a transfer of $130,000 transfer to the Police Department to cover overtime expenses.
“Overtime expenses have been higher than budgeted due to several officer injuries and vacancies,” Leonard said in his communication to Mayor Arthur Vigeant. “We are currently in the process of filling two patrol officers’ vacancies and a lieutenant’s vacancy.”
