Obit Virginia NelsonShrewsbury – Virginia “Ginny” Nelson, of Shrewsbury, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 5, 2016, surrounded by members of her loving family. Her husband, Bertil L. Nelson, predeceased her in 1977.

She was born Dec. 15, 1928 in Winchendon to Henry and Maude Sawyer, and grew up on the family farm.

She is survived by her three children, Jennifer Walker and her husband Terry Walker of Mesquite, Texas, Karl Nelson and his wife Nancy of Shrewsbury, and Laura Reynolds of Shrewsbury; eight grandchildren, Melissa and Vanessa Walker, Patrick, Brian, Elizabeth and Annika Nelson, and Rosemarie and Timothy Reynolds; a brother, Othro “Tom” Sawyer of Hubbardston; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Julia McConnell and Rotha Sawyer, and two brothers, Robert and Bradley Sawyer.

Ginny worked for over 15 years at UMass Medical in the HR department. She was especially proud of her work at an internal placement agency called TempRight. She spent her retirement enjoying her garden, card games at the Shrewsbury Senior Center, travelling, and spending time with her family.

Calling Hours will be held Monday, March 7, from 4-6 p.m., with a funeral service to follow at 6 p.m. in the Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., Worcester. A private burial will be held later.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Shrewsbury Senior Center, 98 Maple Ave., Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
