Obit Edward ChewShrewsbury – Edward H. Chew died Friday March 18, 2016 at UMass Memorial Healthcare. He was 84.

Born in Worcester, Ed was the youngest of four to the late Savile and Alice (Longthorpe) Chew. As a boy, he worked in his parent’s Olde English Fish & Chip shop in South Worcester. He graduated from North High School in 1950. While in high school, he was a standout athlete and was voted as an All-City Football End. He graduated from Leicester Junior College with a Business Degree. He continued to play football in college and semi-pro.

Ed served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, something that he, like any veteran, was so very proud of. He served on the U.S.S Tanner AGS-15 and U.S.S. Greenwich Bay AVP-41. He returned to Worcester and, as fate would have it, one night he would meet the love of his life, Virginia, at the Polish National American Club. They would marry Sept. 14, 1957 at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Worcester and spend the next 58 years together.

Ed went to work as a manager at C&R Tire in Worcester in 1962 and later had the opportunity to purchase the business in 1974. True to his generation, Ed had a strong work ethic. He appreciated the opportunity to serve his customers. While he semi-retired in 1995, he still “volunteered” his time at his family business.

Ed and Virginia have called Shrewsbury home since 1981. Active in many organizations, he was a member of the American Legion Post 319. During his sons’ baseball years, he was involved in the Joe Schwartz Baseball League as manager, sponsor and on the board of directors. A true sportsmen, Ed loved watching all sports but especially the Red Sox, Patriots and UConn Women’s basketball. He enjoyed tending to his yard, making bird houses and traveling to his house in Maine.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia M. (Sableski) Chew; two sons, James P. Chew and his wife Lori of Holden and Paul E. Chew of Auburn; two grandchildren, Joshua Chew and Allison Vilandre; three great-grandchildren, Quentin, Lucas and Kahlan; a sister, Alice Jones of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Edna Aldrin and Frances Evans.

Ed’s wishes were for a private gathering in Heald & Chiampa Funeral Home, followed by burial with military honors in Mountain View Cemetery.

One may honor Ed’s memory with a donation to the Worcester Veteran’s Homeless Shelter, 69 Grove St., Worcester, MA 01605.
