Obit Barbara J. HayesShrewsbury – Barbara J. (Martin) Hayes, 86, a longtime Shrewsbury resident, died Saturday, April 2, 2016 in the Beaumont Rehabilitation Center in Worcester, surrounded by her loving family.

Barbara was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Norman H. and Alice M. (Kender) Martin. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy. She married Edmond P. Hayes in 1951, and together they raised their family in Shrewsbury. They were married for 57 wonderful years before Edmond died in 2008.

Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She also played an active role in most of the neighborhood children’s lives, and cared for many of them as their parents worked. She was a member of the neighborhood sewing circle and was a parishioner of Saint Anne’s Parish.

Barbara loved cooking and celebrating all the holidays, especially Thanksgiving, when she would be surrounded by her entire family. She always made her annual trip to the Scallop Festival on Cape Cod in September and enjoyed vacationing at York Beach in Maine.

She leaves her children, Barbara A. Whittemore and her husband Andrew of Shrewsbury, Janice G. Haines of Hopkinton, and Edmond P. Hayes Jr. and his wife Cynthia of Millbury; seven grandchildren, Andrew and his wife Krissie, Matthew and his wife Crystal, James and his wife Amy, Christine, Gary Jr. and his wife Kerry, Julie, and Edmond III; eight great-grandchildren, Callie, Orion, Chloe, Drew, Audrey, Mollee, Abbigayle, and Joshua; a brother, Norman H. Martin Jr, of Redlands, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Beverly Ludovico, and son-in-law, Gary R. Haines, predeceased her.

The Hayes family would like to thank the entire staff at Beaumont for all the love and compassionate care that was given to Barbara for the past seven years.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Barbara’s family Tuesday, April 5, from 4-7 p.m., in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury. Her funeral will be held Wednesday, April 6 from the funeral home with a funeral Mass celebrating her life at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Tpke., Shrewsbury. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury.
