Region – Nearly 39,000 union workers at Verizon, stretching from Massachusetts to Virginia went on strike April 13. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and Communications Workers of America (CWA) maintain the landline phone and FIOS network.
According to Myles Calvey, IBEW local 2222 in Boston, Verizon wants to gut job security protections, require employees to work anywhere in the Verizon footprint for up to two months, increase insurance costs to the employees and contract out more work including moving work overseas.
The company and unions have been in contract negotiations since June 2015. The current contract expired last year in August 2015.
