Westborough – Police Chief Alan Gordon released this statement this afternoon:
On 4/13/16, at approximately 1:05 PM, the Westborough Police Department responded to 105 W. Main St. for a motor vehicle accident involving a 2001 Ford Explorer and a utility pole. The arriving units found a utility pole snapped in half with wires in the roadway. The female operator of the vehicle, Jill L. Welch, age 59 of 9 Grove St. Hopkinton, was located outside the vehicle. She had minor visible and internal injuries. She was treated by paramedics from the Westborough Fire Department and transported to U. Mass Medical Hospital.
Power throughout a moderate portion of town was disrupted for over a couple of hours. The operator of the vehicle initially told the officers she looked down to answer her cell phone and then struck the pole. An investigation by Off. Tyson Delong has resulted in Ms. Welch being charged with a marked lanes violation and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcoholic beverages.
She will be arraigned at a later date.
