Region – The Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AVMCJROTC) from Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School in Marlborough was represented at the Joint Service Grand National Championship Competition in Orlando, Fla., April 22-24. The cadets participated in the following events: Physical Fitness Test, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flight, Brain Brawl (Academic evaluation of military, scholastic, current events, and general knowledge), marksmanship, inspection, Color Guard, and Dual Exhibition with arms. The other events offered at the competition were precision shooting, platoon-size Standard Drill with and without rifles, platoon-size Exhibition Drill with and without rifles, and inspection with rifles.

Numerous schools were represented from as far away as Germany. AVMCJROTC was the youngest unit present with only 20 months existence while the other units predominantly had been in existence for 20 years plus. The unit returned as Joint Service Grand National Champions in the UAV flight, placing first in each event within the UAV events as well as the overall first place team. The academic platoon finished third place overall in the top division, Division 1. Inspection finished third place as well, in Division 2.
