Obit Norman SmithHudson – Norman Edward Smith, 77, of Hudson, died Saturday, May 14, 2016, after a long period of failing health, at Saint Vincent’s Hospital of Worcester.

Norman leaves his wife of 55 years, Natalie (Ekholm) Smith; his two sons, Dr. Stephen J. Smith and his wife Dianne of Holden and Thomas E. Smith and his wife Elizabeth of West Newbury; his four grandchildren, Cameron, Ethan, Jack, and Molly; his sister, Diane (Smith) Bradley and her husband Robert of Shrewsbury and Florida; and his brother, David Smith and his wife Susan of Somerset.

Norman was born Aug. 22, 1938 in Fall River, son of the late Harold N. and Gladys (Murray) Smith. He was raised in Fall River and Dighton, and was a 1956 graduate of Durfee High School in Fall River. He later received his Bachelor’s Degree from Bridgewater State Teachers College in 1960.

He was an elementary school teacher in Sudbury for 40 years until retiring in 2000. Following his retirement, he worked part-time for 11 years at the Hudson Public Library in the Children’s Room.

He had been a resident of Hudson for the past 53 years and was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Marlborough.

Norman had many interests, including running, fishing, reading, woodworking, and gardening, and always looked forward to listening to jazz and classical music in his spare time. He cherished spending time with his family, especially later with his grandchildren. He will be truly missed by all who loved and knew him.

Anyone who wishes to join the family in celebrating Norm’s life may attend calling hours Saturday, May 21, from 4-7 p.m., at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home (www.tighehamilton.com), 50 Central St., Hudson. A memorial service will take place at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Marlborough sometime in June, with a time and date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, Norm asked that memorial donations be made to St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 537 Bolton St., Marlborough, MA 01752 or the Hudson Public Library, 3 Washington St., Hudson, MA 01749.
