Marlborough – In accordance with the city’s new Hospitality and Recreation Mixed Use Overlay District Ordinance, Walker Realty LLC submitted a site plan review application for the Apex Center, a large commercial project planned for Route 20, west of Glen Street, to the City Council at the May 23 meeting. It was referred to the Urban Affairs Committee for study and recommendation.
The proposed 475,000-square-foot development will include two hotels, office buildings, restaurants and an indoor recreation and entertainment complex, featuring a bowling alley, cart racing, laser tag, billiards and a rock climbing wall. Confirmation has been received from Hyatt to construct a 237-room hotel at the site. At a public hearing held recently, residents of Glen Street expressed concern about the facility being constructed too close to their homes.
In submitting the site plan to the council, Attorney Arthur Bergeron of Mirick O’Connell asked for swift action “to help accommodate a summer start date and allow substantial portions of the project to open in the fall of 2017.” Bergeron told committee members that the land provides about $45,000 a year in tax revenue and that amount would increase to more than $1.3 million a year if developed.
