Shrewsbury – The parking lot at Saint Mary School in Shrewsbury now has three brightly colored number patterns inspiring students to engage with “feet on” math games. Service Club students recently partnered with the Sidewalk Math team to plan, layout stencils and paint the “Count Dragons,” “Count to Order” and “Count-By 2, 3 and 5” number graphics which will serve as inspiration for active math games, songs and activities about numbers.

The number patterns will be utilized by Saint Mary preschool, elementary and afterschool faculty to compliment the current math curriculum and inspire a lifelong interest in math concepts and number sense through walking, hopping and skipping activities accompanied by rhymes and songs.

The school thanked Art Bardige, creator of Sidewalk Math and Lesley University trustee; Martha Barry McKenna, project director of Sidewalk Math and university professor and director of the Creativity Commons at Lesley University; and Ryan McQuade, artist and designer of Sidewalk Math and graduate of Lesley University College of Art and Design for their enthusiastic guidance with this project.

This math enrichment opportunity at Saint Mary School was made possible thanks to a mini grant from their community partner, Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce.
